Getting new Seattle replacement windows is exciting. And as such an expensive investment, homeowners want to do all they can to prolong the life of their windows and keep them in good repair. Not sure where to start? Here are some of the simple maintenance tasks you can use to keep windows in top shape.

Inspect the Windows

Routine inspections should be part of regular window maintenance. This means checking the windows every couple of months for signs of damage, wear, and tear. Some signs will be obvious like broken glass, warped frames, rust, and rot. Other signs of damage might be less apparent like water damage and air leaks. It is also important to test all of the windows to make sure they open and close smoothly without too much effort.

Clean the Window Frame

Once the inspection is complete it is time for routine cleaning and maintenance. Start by washing the frames with some mild detergent and water. Rinse with clear water and dry quickly so water does not seep into the window assembly. This will keep the frames in good condition and looking like new. There is never any reason to use harsh chemicals, abrasives, or power washers on the windows. These types of products can damage the frames and break the seals—not ideal if you want your windows to last.

Wash the Glass

Next up is cleaning the glass. Most generic glass cleaners will work, as well as mild detergent and water. Some homeowners even swear by a simple blend of water and vinegar to keep the glass clean. On the exterior glass, you can use a squeegee to wipe them clean. On the inside, you will want to clean with a lint-free cloth for the best polish and shine.

Spray the Screens

Once the glass is clean it is time to remove the screens and place them on a flat surface for cleaning. You can put them out on the driveway or prop them up on the bathtub. Spray them with water and use some detergent and a soft bristle brush to remove dirt and debris. Then rinse the screens until the water runs clear and allow them plenty of time to dry completely. That way, when you replace them, you don’t get water droplets on your freshly cleaned windows.

Clear the Tracks

The next step in window maintenance is cleaning out the tracks. Use a vacuum hose and a brush attachment to remove the loose debris. For anything wedged in the track, you will want you to use a plastic putty knife or something similar that will not scratch or damage the finish.

Lubricate Moving Parts

Once the tracks are clean it is time for the silicone lubricant. But again, do not try and spray directly on the track or the hinges. Overspray could get on the windows and you will have to wipe them down again. Instead, it is better to spray the lubricant directly into a cloth and then wipe down the track and moving parts. Making this part of your regular window maintenance will help keep the operation smooth and the window functioning for years to come.
